First off, I am in no way, shape, form, or logic some kinda scratchboard guru. Most likely, my way of doing things is all sorts of screwed up to a true artisan of this craft. But there are no other tutorials for scraper/scratchboard, and it's too much fun as a medium to ignore altogether. I just wanted to share what I found out working with it.
Tool's you'll need for this: Pencil for sketching out tracing paper/ wax paper to transfer. a SCRATCH KNIFE. It looks like a sharp shovel. a PEN NIB HOLDER..to...hold your scratch knife nib. Higgin's black india ink A crappy brush to apply your darkest shadows w/ ink slightly diluted in water. Scraperboard/ Scratchboard/ Clayboard- Available at a fair amount of art stores. Soft paintbrush, to brush away scratched off bits. Extra paper (if you're using the boards that are pre-inked), because human oils tend to make the scratchboard a bit more difficult to scratch if they get on the board.
I hope this gets others interested in trying this out. If you do some artwork you learned from this tutorial, be sure to send me a note or leave me a link to it!
Ah~ this is really cool : D I'm taking AP drawing atm and the paper closet at school has two whole packs of unopened scratch boards so I've been wanting to try them out~ And now that I know how, I can : D
